The year was 2005. And I took the road along the canals, cause it is level and there were no border controls. In Charleroi there were many sex shops but no places for vagabonds. The bus drivers didn't check tickets but they had special units coming sometimes to do that. In the center of Mons there were a little mountain of cityshops among others an armyshop. I slept and ate about 4 days for free and without passport. I don´t remember the name of the organisation for sleep, but it´s in all larger cities - a social worker cooperate there -, and they usually allow all kinds of people - esspecially belgish and french - to sleep 14 days free. They also told me, that in Brussels you can just phone Armee du Salut, and they will come and pick you up on the street in a bus. The Metro-system from Lille reach far out, and I used it instead of walking. In Belgium You can also make some Money by collecting bottles on the street and then by selling them to a supermarket.

Hi, me again:) I was in Bruessel/Bruxelles... I think it was march 2006. All places for sleeping or for food, are in triangle of metro stations: luise - porte de hal - lemonier. Place for sleeping, from 20-08 o´clock, is: asile de nuit, rue terre-neuve 153. But sleeping is every second night (second place is old NATO base). place for shower and washing of cloths one time per week is just 2 streets far away: la fontaine, rue de flouristes 13. from 10-13 o´clock. it is necessary to bring paper from asile the nuit, because they want to be sure that someone is homeless. daily place is poverello, it is 50m from la fontaine. the street is: rue de l´economie 4, and they work from 9-17. lunch is 1 euro. nativitas, rue haute 116-118, works from 10-17, lunch is 1,5 euro, shower 1 euro, etc. if you want to take a cake, first you must order lunch. so, for me it is materialist mentality which should not exist in work with homeless. beside it, Belgium is very dirty, but Bruessel has many very beautifull African women.

Well, sleeping system is complicated in Bruessel, so it is necessary to explain it. in asil de nuit, people can sleep every second night. People must come at 20 o´clock, there ar emany people who wait, so come bofore. workers always ask is someone new (first time), if yes, he has surely place for sleeping. other get place for sleeping if they didn´t sleep there the night before. at 21 o´lock, people come again and if there are mor epoeple than places for sleeping, they give some cards. Who get black card, no sleeping, who get red one, he can sleep there. beside this place, there is one more: NATO base. at 20 and at 20:30 o´clock, people must call telephone number (it is number for free: 0800/99340 (you must try 100 times) and then they make your name on the list and they say to you to wait bus at main entrance of the main train station, at 22 o´clock. You will loose one hour and more till they let you to come in in bus, till you come to that base, so about midnight you can start to sleep, till 8 o´clock in the morning. in the morning they give you little breakfast and ticket for metro to go back in the town. this number can be called every evening, not every second. there is one more number, which I never called: 800/21488, rue de la consolation 81, you must call at 20:45 o´clock. be carefully for your things in all places, some people steal from other. all this addresses people can get in Caritas and in asil de nuit. I don´t know do they work during sommer, I was there in March. libraries have no internet for people who are not members of it. you need username and password. as editor of this Site mentioned: sometimes controll surround tram and they cotroll everybody inside.
