FRANCE
Lille is a City in Northfrance. Together with Roubaix and Tourcoing, Lille forms the heart of a larger urban conglomeration with a 1999 population of over 1.1 million. Lille is an important crossroads in the European TGV network: it lies on the Eurostar line to London and the Thalys network to Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and Cologne. It has two train stations, which stand next door to each other: Gare Lille-Europe and Gare Lille-Flandre. The VAL system (véhicule automatique léger = light automated vehicle) is a driverless metro. There are 60 stations which go as far as the Belgian border. I used the metro in year 2005, and there were a superior count of metro assistants to inform people, but usually none of them checked tickets.
French don´t pay anything at supermercets for collected bottles - like germans - but the french People often give to beggars, for instance just write a sign on some cartoon saying "I need food!" in french and sit with that out on a popular corner; people will give! When begging you will probably also be met with organisation-people who invite you. If you have a passport and are ready to roll in as job seeker, you could apply for french social wellfare - a place called Assendic, you should get more than 400 Euro each month.
PLACES TO GET FOOD FOR FREE
In all France they have this Organisation "The Restuarant of the Heart" who provides food for free in every major city.
LILLE: Name: AIDE or perhaps AIDA Rue de la Justice (take metro to warzemmes, and when you turn right down Rue de la Justice, it´s on the right side of the street number 40 or perhaps 60) This organisation served one large meal every day, would you only wash dishes once in a week. On the south side of Rue de Solferino another organisation serves some breakfeast and provide with information.French Taxi Drivers were useless regarding crucial information, but you could ask tourist information about place of the Salvation Army, which in french is "Armee du Salut" and you can ask other Beggars about advice too!
PLACES TO SLEEP FOR FREE
Anywhere in France you can always telephone and dial 115 (free call) for Information about a place to sleep and eat for free! Some Cities have places to sleep for the homeless all the year round, but others only in the winter and others none.

LILLE The name Lille comes from insula or l'Isla, since the area was at one time marshy. This name was used for the Count of Flanders' castle (Château du Buc), built on dry land in the middle of the marsh. More ...
